Michigan State University will host a conference today on Rumi, the 13th-century Muslim poet, mystic and philosopher. The conference will be followed by poetry reading, whirling dervishes and traditional Sufi music. The events will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the MSU Union's Parlor Room and Gold Room. There will be another celebration with live music, whirling dervishes from Turkey, calligraphy and a play about Rumi at 6 p.m. Sunday at Holt High School, 5885 W. Holt Road in Holt. Fill up on Greek food at Holy Trinity
The Holy Trinity Philoptochos Society holds its 58th annual Athenian Luncheon and Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday (lunch is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). There will be Greek food and pastries; the event is at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw Highway.

Pennsylvania Avenue church turns 81
Pennsylvania Avenue Original Church of God, 3500 S. Pennsylvania Ave., will celebrate its 81st church anniversary/homecoming on Friday and Nov. 11.
On Friday, the 7 p.m. service will feature guest speaker Pastor Iris Cotton of Fearless Faith Ministries. There will be worship at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11, with Elder James Cobb of Williams Chapel Original Church of God speaking in the afternoon. For more information, call 882-4114.

Mason First UMC pastor gets doctorate
The senior pastor at one of mid-Michigan's oldest churches recently earned his fourth post-graduate degree.
The Rev. Robert Hundley received a doctor of ministry degree from the Western Theological Seminary in Holland. He has served Mason First United Methodist Church since July 2000. Hundley and his wife, Pigeon, live in Mason.
